The Tony-winning set designer says he wants to help increase the number of young theatergoers.
What: Theater Development Fund's Open Doors is a mentoring program that offers a select group of New York City high school students an in-depth experience with arts professionals. For an entire school year, students attend Broadway shows and post-show discussions with their mentors.
Why: "My hopes are modest: that a couple of them each year will develop a habit of going to Broadway shows who might not otherwise," says McLane, also a Tony-winning set designer. McLane was inspired to get involved by a friend, the late playwright Wendy Wasserstein , who started the program to increase the number of young theatergoers.
